A magical encounter

Whilst we were walking through the forest this morning, my children and I were looking for magical creatures.

This is something we regularly do together. You see, children are closer to the enchanted realm than adults, and so they tend to see faerie beings more often.

Eventually, after a few fleeting glimpses of some naughty little goblins, and almost treading in some smelly ogre scat, my son came upon some unicorn hoof prints in the dirt.

He excitedly told me a special secret about unicorns; he said to me that if we were lucky enough to see a unicorn in the forest, we must keep our eyes open, unblinking, for as long as we could possibly manage....

... Because the very moment we blinked, the unicorn would disappear.

As we were walking back home, we were stopped in our tracks by a gleaming white animal emerging from the trees. At first we struggled to make it out because of the low winter sun and the strange creature’s almost misty, shimmering form, but there it was before us; A real unicorn.

Our feet planted to the floor, hearts pounding, and our breath held tight in our chests, we stared, unblinking, until our eyes watered from the strain and tears rolled down our cheeks.

The unicorn calmly gazed in our direction, through eyes as dark as midnight and long, snowy lashes. It had a silky mane which flowed and swayed in the breeze, and the daintiest hooves which barely made a mark in the fallen leaves. The unicorn seemed to glow as bright as the full moon on a clear night, radiating love and gentleness and wisdom which spanned a thousand human lifetimes....

And then we blinked. And it was gone.
